Professional Teeth Whitening

A bright, white smile is one of the most sought-after aesthetic improvements in dentistry today. Professional teeth whitening performed under the supervision of a dentist is the safest, most effective way to lighten tooth discoloration and achieve a noticeably whiter smile. Unlike over-the-counter whitening products, professional treatments use higher-concentration bleaching agents that deliver dramatic results in a fraction of the time.

Tooth discoloration occurs for a variety of reasons. Extrinsic staining — affecting the outer enamel layer — is commonly caused by foods and beverages such as coffee, tea, red wine, and berries, as well as tobacco use. Intrinsic staining affects the inner dentin layer and may result from aging, certain medications (such as tetracycline), excessive fluoride exposure during tooth development, or trauma to a tooth. Professional whitening is most effective for extrinsic staining, though it can also improve the appearance of mild intrinsic discoloration.

At Falmouth Family Dentistry, we offer both in-office and take-home professional whitening options. In-office whitening provides the fastest results, typically lightening teeth by several shades in a single appointment. A protective barrier is applied to the gums before a high-concentration peroxide gel is carefully applied to the teeth. Take-home whitening kits use custom-fitted trays made from impressions of your teeth, ensuring even coverage and minimizing gum irritation. Patients wear the trays for a prescribed period each day, with results typically achieved over one to two weeks.

It is important to note that teeth whitening does not affect the color of dental restorations such as crowns, veneers, bonding, or tooth-colored fillings. If you have existing restorations in visible areas, your dentist will discuss the best approach to achieving a uniform, natural-looking result. A thorough examination and cleaning prior to whitening ensures optimal results and helps identify any conditions — such as cavities or gum disease — that should be addressed before treatment begins.

The results of professional teeth whitening can last from several months to a few years, depending on diet, oral hygiene habits, and lifestyle factors. Periodic touch-up treatments and avoiding staining foods and beverages can help maintain your brighter smile long-term. Our team will provide personalized guidance on how to preserve your results and keep your smile looking its best.
